I'm a software engineer and it took me sometime to get it right for the first time. The simple solution is this  WD TV Live Hub http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=570. You just connect it to the TV and all you need to do is stick some videos on its hard drive.  Might friend has it and he is very happy with it.  It might be a bit difficult.
